DOING GOOD & DOING WELL

healthcare workers and nurses Abroad

Watching our clients accomplish extraordinary things and helping so many with our grant funding and social enterprise support, we were inspired to start our own project and contribute to the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDG8 and SDG10 in particular). Our motivation to teach others how to bring to life their charitable dreams is as strong as ever, but we are also ready to get back in the game ourselves and ‘Do Good’.

    WHAT IS HEALTHCARE ABROAD?

    OUR NEW HEALTHCARE ABROAD INITIATIVE

Healthcare Abroad is our newest initiative, whereby we support care workers and nurses from overseas and the UK (who need a Sponsorship Licence) to find work in the UK. These are people at the top of their fields, with years of experience and the motivation to implement innovative care practices.

While our main focus is on the care workers and nurses, in line with SDG8 and SDG10 (Decent Work and Economic Growth, Reduced Inequalities), our work supports the other side (care homes, domiciliary care facilities, and agencies) equally. The main objective is to find a strong fit between candidate and employer, for the benefit of the UK communities and patients.

      WHY ARE WE DOING IT?

      EXPECTED IMPACT OF HEALTHCARE ABROAD
      E

      Professional development opportunities

As per SDG8 and SDG 10, we want to see dedicated and gifted healthcare workers and nurses in underdeveloped countries and the UK awarded opportunities to grow professionally and do inspiring work with their patients. Their current settings do not allow them to innovate, so we are helping them get in touch with care homes in the UK who will welcome it.

      E

      Care excellence

The carers and nurses we work with are some of the best, and their involvement in our initiative is evidence of their willingness to learn and develop. This is the kind of presence which UK care homes and domiciliary care facilities could strongly benefit from, especially in the midst of a carer and nurse shortage.

      E

      Stronger UK communities

Healthcare work is central to a community, and it can have significant economic and social impact on those around. Our candidates wish to be involved beyond the job and integrate in communities that will welcome and value their efforts.

      WHAT IS A SPONSORSHIP LICENCE?

AND HOW CAN YOU GET ONE?

Looking to add international talent to your UK team? A sponsorship licence is what you need. It’s a straightforward process with the Home Office that allows you to hire from outside the UK. Once you have it, you can issue Certificates of Sponsorship for your overseas hires – a must-have for their work visa applications. Think of it as your key to unlocking a world of global talent, ensuring you stay compliant while diversifying your workforce.

If you are an employer and do not already hold a sponsorship licence, we can also support you in obtaining one. The process of hiring from overseas is not as complex as it seems.

      WHO DO WE SUPPORT?

ORGANISATIONS AND INDIVIDUALS WHO CAN BENEFIT FROM HEALTHCARE ABROAD

      INTERNATIONAL CARERS AND NURSES

We support carers and nurses from overseas to match with the right employer in the UK, so they can continue to develop professionally, bring patients hope and contribute to communities.

CARE HOMES AND DOMICILIARY CARE FACILITIES

There is no hiding that we are experiencing a carer and nurse shortage in the UK. We want to see those places filled by dedicated and experienced workers who will strengthen their communities.

      RECRUITMENT AGENCIES

We also work with agencies who are looking fill spots for their clients in care homes and domiciliary care facilities. Our main goal is for each employee to find the right place for them, not that we are alone to make this happen.

WHY RECRUIT OVERSEAS HEALTHCARE WORKERS AND NURSES?

ORGANISATIONS AND INDIVIDUALS WHO CAN BENEFIT FROM TEACHERS ABROAD

Higher chances to find the best fit, by widening your pool of candidates
      Cultural diversity and enrichment
Community engagement is a key value in their culture, so they will connect with patients and bring their hope back
Perseverance in the face of adversity, as they often cared for their patients outside their work hours or with little to no pay
✓ Passion and loyalty, which will increase your staff retention rates

By collaborating with us you are also supporting the UN’s Sustainable Goals. You can start by feeling great about doing your part to make the world a better place. This contribution can also help you build a strong image – your values can give you an advantage over other care homes/domiciliary care facilities in the public eye.

      It’s a win-win.

Find answers to the most commonly asked questions about the Theory of Change and our services.

What qualifications do I need to become a healthcare worker or nurse in England?

To work as a healthcare worker or nurse in England, you typically need relevant qualifications recognized by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) or equivalent professional bodies. For nurses, this means a nursing degree and registration with the NMC. Healthcare workers may require vocational training or NVQs in health and social care.

How might care work in England be different from my own country?

Care work in England may differ in terms of healthcare protocols, patient interaction styles, and regulatory frameworks. The National Health Service (NHS) and private healthcare providers have specific standards and procedures. Cultural differences in patient care and communication can also be significant.

How do I find accommodation in the UK?

Finding suitable long-term accommodation is an important aspect to a settled working environment for any new international teacher. Quantum Scholars provide guidance to help you achieve this but ultimately it will be down to teachers to view and secure their own accommodation.

Whilst it would be fantastic to have accommodation set up before arriving in England, we advise against signing a lease or paying a deposit until you have actually seen a property in person!

We recommend that teachers have pre-arranged accommodation for the first few days following on from the Teacher Induction event, usually a cheap hotel or bed and breakfast that is local to where you will be living long term. Airbnb has been a revelation in helping teachers get set up with an initial place to live over recent years. Please remember though that you will not have access to a car, so make sure your initial accommodation allows you to get around easily and view other properties that are within a good travelling distance to your school where you’ll be commuting to every day.

With a short-term base, you can then arrange viewings for longer-term accommodation whilst getting a feel for the area you’re living in. Shared accommodation is the most common and recommended suggestion for overseas teachers arriving in England, especially if you’re travelling alone. It’s the best way to save money and it also provides excellent opportunities to meet new friends.

Contracts will typically be 6 months long but there are plenty of other options on websites such as www.spareroom.co.uk for house shares and more flexible contracts. Also try www.zoopla.co.uk for whole properties.

Have in mind a figure of paying somewhere between £400-£550 per month (outside London) including bills as part of a house share and approximately £600-£800 per month living inside London. There are of course cheaper options that do come up as well but this is a good conservative figure to keep in mind.

What is the salary for a teacher in England?

Your salary will greatly differ depending on the city you live in, to be in line with living costs. This means that if you are located in London you will likley have  a greater salary than other areas.

The average salary for Healthcare Worker is £29,160 per year.

The average NHS salary ranges from approximately £22,850 per year for Nursing Assistant to £60,121 per year for Advanced Practice Registered Nurse.

What support is available for overseas healthcare workers adjusting to life in England?

Overseas healthcare workers in England can access various support systems, including language courses, cultural orientation programs, professional development training, and networking opportunities with other healthcare professionals. Employers and local communities often provide resources to assist with accommodation, schooling, and adapting to the local lifestyle.

How do I set up a bank account in England?

Opening up a high street bank account is not always the easiest exercise for international teachers when they first arrive in England. Thankfully though there is a relatively new and fast growing alternative online bank called www.monzo.com which is extremely helpful in bypassing the issues teachers experience when opening an account with a high street bank.

When opening a high street bank account you generally have to provide evidence of having a long term address in England which is highly unlikely for teachers when they first arrive in England. With Monzo however you can open an account without having to provide a long term home address.  Monzo will also provide you with the same debit card as a high street bank meaning you’re able to always have access to cash through ATMs and make online/in-store purchases.

VISIT www.monzo.com/download for more information on how to start an account. Please note though that you can only open the account online once you arrive in England.

If you do still prefer and choose to go through a high street bank, there are plenty of them and this is what you will need to help set you up with an account when you arrive:

      • Your passport
      • Your visa
      • A letter of employment from you school/employer (Quantum Scholars)
      • A utility bill from your previous home address overseas (dated within last three months of arrival)
      • Evidence of your long term residence in England (utility bill / tenancy agreement)

The UK has a whole range of well-known high street banks so look out for any of the following when setting up an account: Natwest, HSBC, Halifax, Barclays, Lloyds, RBS, Nationwide, Santander.

How do I get a National Insurance Number?

When you arrive in England, you must search for your local Job Centre Plus and book an appointment with them to start the process towards gaining a National Insurance number which is something every worker needs to have in England. You will be asked for a short fact to face interview and then provided with an NI number although the process can take several weeks. Until gaining an NI number you will be on an emergency tax code but the tax you pay will always be straightened out once you gain your NI number.

To learn more about National Insurance please visit www.gov.uk/national-insurance.
